PSA #BeReal Write your truth, because that’s what resonates. Artist A vs. Artist B
I just watched one artist, Artist A, go viral for speaking his truth. (I’ll tell you who he is at the end.)
Then, I’m scrolling and another artist, Artist B, pops up on my feed , again!
Artist B’s been trying so hard. He has a label with butt loads of cash to market him, a team, and connections. His songs are that everyday radio song – predictable and frankly, bland.
I study marketing like it’s a sport, and Artist B’s stuff hasn’t resonated with me for a while. It’s just... fluff, to me.
I’ve heard from insiders that this artist is struggling to make numbers (sell tickets, streams, etc.)
I’ve been trying to figure out fundamentally why Artist B hasn’t resonated and why it’s not working.
Then, it hit me like a brick this morning!
His message and posts/content aren’t authentic. It’s not real.
Meaning, it doesn’t CONNECT. #dingding
Y’all, the time - TODAY - that we live in is different.
We’ve all needed connection - it’s what makes us human.
But…. TODAY is different. Why?
We are faced with something that is changing the world at light speed now. It’s been creeping up on us for years.
It’s kind of like a cook seasoning a dish.
The cook’s been seasoning our lives with technology,
…but somebody is about to dump the whole damn shaker into the dish and ruin it.
The Beatles, Nina Simone, Bob Marley…
They weren't just about the tunes; they were the voice of their era. They thrived because they were real.
In the digital age, with auto-tune and social media filters, it's easy to lose oneself.
But here's the thing, the world’s craving genuine connections, now more than ever!
Go listen to “Rich Men North of Richmond” …. watch the people flocking to this!
That’s Artist A’s viral song. His name is Oliver Anthony.
Artist A is real, and he connects. He’s stating what the world is going through right now.
It’s raw, it’s real. He’s like Bob Dylan meets Tyler Childers.
I hope Artist B does well. I just think we all need to be more real which will connect us with others.
It’s in our DNA. It’s what makes us human.
And, I’m not saying we all need to write about the state of the world and what we are dealing with and be Oliver Anthony.
I just mean, be real and true to yourself and write what you feel, what you really think. Be vulnerable.
In a day and time where we can fake a lot and use the “artificial” to seem more intellegent and attractive, the danger is we lose the connection with others.
I’m taking my own advice, cuz what hurts many times means there may be truth in it.
So I snapped this unfiltered, no makeup, swollen face photo (cuz I ate too much sugar yesterday), grabbed a cup of coffee, a pen and paper and I’m heading to the piano.
Anyway, I love you all. That’s real. So is this picture.
